Zillertal Arena Region

Farmers’ markets, ancient traditions and the largest ski resort in the area: the Zillertal Arena region lies at the end of the Zillertal Valley, surrounded by the Zillertal Alps and the Tux Alps.

Surrounded by the peaks of the Zillertal Alps and Tux Alps, Zell-Gerlos holiday region at the end of the Zillertal Valley includes the town of Zell am Ziller, the valley’s economic and political centre, and the village of Gerlos in the Gerlostal Valley branching off to the east. While Gerlos comprises several hamlets on the valley floor and the mountain slopes, extending as far as the Durlassboden-Stausee reservoir on the border to the neighbouring province of Salzburg, Zell am Ziller is a bustling market town. Attractions there include the Zillertalbahn railway with its steam engines and old carriages as well as the most important cable cars serving the Zillertal Arena, the largest ski resort in the region. The town also hosts farmers’ markets, concerts and events. The most famous event of the year in Zell am Ziller is without a doubt the Gauderfest in early May, one of the oldest celebrations of its kind in Tirol. A special beer, the Gauderbock, is brewed to mark this weekend of parties, parades and ancient customs such as the Ranggler wrestling competitions.

Family-friendly region with stunning panoramic views

During the winter months many visitors are drawn to the Zillertal Arena with its 147km of pistes, while in summer the main attractions include the nearby Zillertal Alps Nature Park and the large number of family-friendly activities in the region. Indeed, Zell-Gerlos is among the best areas in Tirol for families with children and has developed a diverse programme of events for children and teenagers, including mountain biking, climbing and canyoning. Another activity ideal for guests of all ages is hiking. Popular hikes in the region are to the Krimmler Wasserfälle, the largest waterfalls in Europe. Families will enjoy a day out at the Freizeitpark Zell, an open-air adventure area with a large pool and other attractions.
